Parking facilities constitute a shared University resource that is accessible to faculty, staff, and students. This safe and convenient resource serves the University's mission of teaching, research, and public service. Harvard University Parking Services recognizes that faculty time is an important resource and, toward that end, their needs are considered strongly when parking resources are allocated.

Parking Registration

New Applications

New faculty and staff members who wish to park on campus must apply for a permit. The permit is valid for a single year, starting on July 1, and granted on a space-available basis. To apply for a permit, applicants should have a Harvard University ID as well as the license plate number, make, and model of the vehicle to be permitted.

Faculty and staff members must either apply for a permit in person at the Parking office, or with their department's Transportation Coordinator. Payment for the months remaining in the academic year is due at the time of registration. If the permit application is filed and approved after April 30, payroll deduction may not be available for the remaining months.

Renewal

Parking Services has synchronized the "permit cycle" with the University's fiscal year. Annual permits are now valid from July 1 through June 30. Please note, payment of outstanding violations must be made to the Parking Office prior to permit renewal.

Please note that the online renewal system closed on Thursday, May 31st, 2012. To renew your parking permit for the 2012/2013 academic year please fill out a paper application by clicking here.

Payment Options

Annual permits can be paid for by any of the following ways:

Permit Types

The University offers a number of general permit types to meet the different commuting needs of faculty and staff members. With the exception of resident and tenant permits, parking permits are for commuting use only. University parking facilities are not to be used for vehicle storage. Each permit is designated for either garage (covered) or surface (uncovered) parking.

Mobile Parking Permits

Parking at Harvard can be difficult, especially for those whose work necessitates them to move throughout the campus on a regular basis. The MOBL (mobile) parking permit helps alleviate some of these problems by authorizing parking in most unreserved parking locations throughout the Cambridge and Allston campuses. This includes parking at any of our staffed facilities between the hours of 7 a.m. and midnight, Monday-Friday. To take advantage of parking in these facilities all faculty and staff MOBL permit holders should, in addition to displaying a MOBL hang tag, have a transponder assigned to them. This transponder will provide hands-free access for our facilities currently utilizing our new access control system. Locations include:

MOBL permits are designed for temporary access to other locations other than designated primary parking location. Your MOBL permit is printed with a designation for your primary location. You must park in this area as much as possible to allow space in small, high demand areas and for others who may require emergency access. We ask that MOBL permit holders limit parking to two hours or less in non-primary locations. Since mobile permit holders can access both garages and surface lots, all unreserved mobile permit holders will be paying the unreserved garage rate, regardless of their primary location.

We ask your further consideration when needing to park in smaller capacity lots such as the QUAD. In order to keep these areas open for MOBL parking, please assure that there is at least one open space in the lot before you park, and strictly limit your parking time. We also ask that parkers please utilize the larger parking areas at the Business School, Broadway and 52 Oxford Street garages over smaller surface lots.

Parking Services, in response to the needs of MOBL permit holders, has implemented "limited access" to the following lots during the hours listed. To guarantee parking in these areas for regular permit holders, MOBL parking rules will be strictly enforced. If a MOBL permit holder is parked in restricted areas during non-MOBL times, they will be ticketed and/or towed, regardless if it is a personal or departmental vehicle.

Once you have completed the delivery, please move your vehicle to the nearest unreserved area.

MOBL parking is restricted in the lots listed above in order to allow adequate space for regular permit holders. Because faculty and staff parking needs change from year to year, mobile access to these lots will be reviewed annually. All enforcement policies apply to MOBL permit holders. Annual fees are based on the unreserved garage rates.

Preferred Parking for Low-Emission and Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

CommuterChoice and Parking Services are pleased to announce the expansion of our preferred parking program for low-emission and fuel-efficient vehicles in many of our garages and large surface lots, due to the success of the pilot program undertaken by Parking Services, the Business School and the Office for Sustainability (OFS).

Similar to carpool spaces, Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV) spaces will be in designated parking areas and will be reserved for qualifying permit holders weekdays until 10:00am. Parking options have been expanded to include several large garages and surface lots across campus, which are listed below:

Longwood Medical Area/Cambridge Reciprocal Parking Agreement

Parking Services is always striving to make parking as convenient as possible for the University community. To help accommodate those who hold Longwood Medical Area parking permits, but have occasional University business on the Cambridge or Allston Campuses, Parking Services has modified its regulations concerning this matter.

Those holding valid Harvard Medical School day permits are authorized to park in the following areas on a space-available basis, weekdays before 5:00 p.m.:

The Broadway and 52 Oxford facilities will provide HMS permit holders an orange permit to place on their dashboards.

Those who must use parking facilities for University business after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends may park in unreserved areas. For details on which areas are unreserved and approved for parking after 5:00 p.m., please visit our campus map by clicking here.

HMS visitors holding any other LMA permit that is not a monthly day permit must purchase a visitor's permit from our One-Day Online Permit Purchase System or from the Parking office at Holyoke Center 8th Floor, 1350 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. Any vehicle parked on University property without a valid permit displayed is subject to ticket and tow. These regulations are enforced on a 24-hour basis, including weekends and University holidays.

Similarly, those holding valid annual Harvard University Cambridge/Allston permits are authorized to park in HMS Parking Garage located at 200 Longwood Ave. on a space-available basis, weekdays 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. This reciprocal parking is only for short term business related meetings on the HMS campus, not full-day parking. The Quad Garage will provide Cambridge/Allston permit holders a permit to place on their dashboard as well as a temporary access card.

Those who must use parking facilities for University business after 7:00 p.m. and on weekends may park in unreserved areas. For details on which areas are unreserved and approved for parking after 7:00 p.m., please visit the LMA campus map at http://parking.med.harvard.edu/PDFs/Maps/HvdCampusMap.pdf.

Although not required, the Medical School Parking office recommends calling prior to arrival on campus, in order to ensure access to the parking facility. Cambridge/Allston visitors holding any other permit that is not an annual permit must call 617.432.1111 and use your 33-digit Harvard billing code to reserve a space. Any vehicle parked on University property without a valid permit displayed is subject to ticket and tow. These regulations are enforced on a 24-hour basis, including weekends and University holidays.

If you have questions regarding the approved use of LMA permits on the Cambridge and Allston Campuses, please contact Parking Services at 617.495.3772.

If you have questions regarding the approved use of Cambridge/Allston permits on the Longwood Medical Area campus, please contact the Parking office at 617.432.1111.

Parking After 5:00 p.m. - Important Safety Reminder

For safety and convenience, all faculty, staff and student parking permits (with the exception of Evening Commuter permits, which are only valid in the designated garage or lot marked on them) are valid in all unreserved parking areas from 5:00 p.m. to midnight (Monday through Thursday) and 5:00 p.m. Friday to midnight on Sunday. Unreserved parking locations are identified in RED on the Parking Map. You may print this map for your own use. Parking in the garages or in the lots shown in Blue is not permissible, and doing so may result in ticketing and/or towing.

Wait Lists

Demand for Cambridge and Allston parking currently exceeds the available supply. Each year Parking Services maintains a waiting list for all parking types on the Cambridge and Allston Campuses. New applicants are wait-listed according to the date received in the Parking office.
