Introducing Energy Idol!

Energy Idol

Manny Mejias

Manny MejiasCongratulations to Environmental Health & Safety's Manny Mejias - he is this month's UOS Energy Idol! The Energy Idol is someone who goes above and beyond, either at work or at home, to reduce energy use and recycle. Each day Manny uses a reusable mug which reduces waste and also reduces the energy required to manufacture and ship new cups. He also consistently sets his computer to sleep mode which significantly lowers energy consumption. Plus, Manny is truly an idol when it comes to buying local, seasonal produce. Doing so reduces the amount of fossil fuels needed to transport produce long distances. Congratulations Manny!

Sam Provost

Sam ProvostCongratulations to Sam Provost from Transportation Services - he is this month's UOS Energy Idol! The Energy Idol is someone who goes above and beyond, either at work or at home, to reduce energy use and recycle.

Each day Sam uses alternative transportation to get to work - this not only reduces GHG emissions but it also lowers costs associated with driving like fuel and repairs. He also uses a Brita water filter at home which is much cheaper than buying bottled water and it also reduces the number of plastic bottles that are thrown away. Plus, anytime you see Sam making copies, he's undoubtedly using the double-side feature.

Congratulations Sam!

Maura Power

Maura PowerCongratulations to A&F’s Maura Power—she is the first ever UOS Energy Idol!

The Energy Idol is someone who goes above and beyond, either at work or at home, to reduce energy use and recycle. A few months ago, Maura took the Sustainability Pledge (www.green.harvard.edu) and since then has been faithfully using the stairs instead of the elevator (the average person can burn 10 calories per minute taking the stairs in addition to saving energy); she’s been recycling much more (the EPA estimates 75% of
what Americans throw in the trash could actually be recycled); and Maura’s been saving money at home by installing CFL light bulbs (each CFL will save an average of $30 over its lifetime).

A new Idol will be selected each month so if you, or someone you know, should be the next UOS Energy Idol, email us at uos_newsletter@harvard.edu.
