Automatic Aerosol Deodorizers, Urinal Blocks, and Waterless Urinals
Automatic Aerosol Deodorizers are not recommended because they are aerosol products which contain high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). If an Automatic Aerosol Deodorizer must be used, then select a non-aerosol air freshening system. Recommended products operate with a wicking system, have no aerosol propellants (and no additional VOCs other than the fragrance itself). Other recommended products use plastic beads infused with fragrance. This also does not generate additional VOCs, and the beads can be recycled when the fragrance is. FMO will continue to source and evaluate potential green options to these products.
Urinal blocks are not recommended, as many contain hazardous materials. Urinal screens without deodorizer blocks can be substituted. If blocks are necessary, then products should be selected that contain the least amount of hazardous materials.
Waterless urinals are now more frequently installed, as they conserve water. Consult the equipment manual for these units prior to cleaning or changing filters. In general cleaning instructions are to spray with product and wipe down, minimizing the introduction of liquid to the unit, and to periodically flush out urinal pipes to avoid crystallization and buildup.
