The FMO Green Cleaning Program is now the standard service offering for our entire cleaning operation. While occasional deviation from this approach can be accommodated, we encourage our Harvard clients to adhere to Green Cleaning principles.
Green Cleaning is defined as “cleaning to protect health without harming the environment” (Steve Ashkin). Procedures and products are utilized which contribute to healthy surroundings for building occupants and cleaning staff, and minimize the impact of cleaning operations on the environment. Building cleanliness is not solely evaluated on appearance. Instead, an equal emphasis is placed on the environmental sustainability of cleaning operations and overall building health.
After researching many known eco-labeling and certification organizations, we have determined that Green Seal is the most widely recognized and utilized cleaning product and services certification organization in the United States. Green Seal principles, certifications and recommendations will be a minimum product selection standard for the FMO Green Cleaning Program. In addition, the Green Seal Standard for Cleaning Services (GS-42) will be used as a guide for providing cleaning services. All FMO custodians have been trained directly by Green Seal in green cleaning procedures and the GS-42 specification, and FMO plans to become GS-42 certified.
FMO also recognizes the EPA’s Design for the Environment, Environmental Choice’s EcoLogo and the European Union’s Ecolabel as certification standards for green cleaning products. While any of these standards are recognized by FMO, in this document acceptably certified products will be referred to as “Green Seal Certified.”
