Engineering & Utilities (E&U) is responsible for managing Harvard's complex utility infrastructure, managing the purchase and operation of energy resources, and providing specialized engineering and technical services for the Cambridge and Allston campuses. Services are managed such that they meet the changing needs of our customers, while maintaining stability and reliability of the University's critical utility systems.
E&U manages the procurement and distribution (including University owned infrastructures) of utilities for much of the University's Cambridge and Allston campuses, including electricity, steam, water, sanitary/storm drainage, natural gas, and fuel oil. In addition, E&U operates the One Oxford Street and Northwest central chilled water plants, manages the Blackstone Steam Plant, and provides utility administration and billing services for all utilities.
E&U provides professional engineering support and oversight of the University's centralized utility systems and infrastructure. E&U also provides project design review as part of the CAPS process for major capital building renovation and construction projects throughout the University. E&U is involved in campus master planning, engineering and energy studies; provides technical support to faculties, departments, and special projects/initiatives (e.g. the University's Green Campus Initiative); and provides project management and owner's representative services on utility capital projects. E&U also provides technical services associated with satellite boiler plant management, elevator services, and inspections/compliance services.
