The EH&S Department manages the University’s pest control support services program. This program includes pest inspection, vendor management, responding to pest infestations, regular inspections of buildings, development of pest vendor specifications, checklists for Building Superintendents and guidelines for students and staff. The program is designed to implement integrated pest management techniques using a “least chemical means” approach. When warranted, least-toxic pesticides are used in a manner that minimizes exposure to humans and the environment.

Program Indicators
  • New construction and renovations utilize designs to minimize pests.
  • A process is established to maintain a pest-free environment for students, faculty and staff.
  • Environmentally safe pest control for buildings and grounds is provided.
  • A process is established to respond to pest complaints and keep records of response.
Facility Manager Checklist
  • Send out a notice to all incoming students requesting they report pests to your office.
  • During periods of limited occupancy, maintain water traps in floor, shower, and slop sinks.
  • Ensure that wall, floor and ceiling penetrations are adequately sealed to prevent pest movement.
  • Conduct a pest control walk-through with EH&S prior to student move-out for units that will be off-line for the summer.
  • Inspect basement rooms and mechanical spaces for pest activity.
  • Examine entrance doors, windows and loading docks to ensure that pest cannot enter.
  • Conduct a grounds survey for rodent burrows and wasp nests.
  • Examine trash receptacles to ensure that rodents do not have access to food waste stored inside.
  • Annually conduct a visual pest inspection of building perimeter to insure that building is rodent proof and do the same for trash storage receptacles.
  • Eliminate standing water on grounds to minimize mosquito breeding areas.
  • Ensure that contractors have reviewed the University Contractor Safety Manual.
