Walking and Working Surfaces

All Harvard employees shall follow fall protection standards outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and by Harvard's Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) department. These standards include details on preventing falls from heights over six feet and also how to protect floor and wall openings. The following guidelines were developed by EH&S to reduce the amount of slips, trips, and falls across Harvard.

• The floor of every workroom shall be maintained in a clean and, so far as possible, dry condition. Where wet processes are used, drainage shall be maintained and false floors, platforms, mats, or other dry standing places should be provided where practicable.
• Covers and/or guardrails shall be provided to protect personnel from the hazards of open pits, tanks, vats, ditches, etc.
• Employees shall utilize personal fall arrest systems in conjunction with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart F when operating manlifts, powered platforms, or vehicle mounted powered platforms
