Machine Guarding

Various types of machinery can be found throughout the University that may present unique hazards such as nip points, rotating parts, blades, and pinch points. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established specialized safety requirements for any machine where parts, functions, or processes may cause injury.

Some of the major provisions of the regulation, 29 CFR 1910.211-219 include:

Harvard University machine operators are responsible for operating the machines with all safeguards in place. Supervisors must ensure that safeguards cannot be defeated and that all machines are operated per the manufacturer's specification.
