Ladders and Scaffolds

Ladders are frequently used to perform a variety of operations, tasks and work related activities. Any University employee who may be expected to use a ladder must be able to recognize potential hazards and appropriately select, set up and use ladders. The Ladder standard is applicable to all persons who are employed by Harvard University and may use any ladder during the course of work (including portable ladders, extension ladders and fixed or permanent ladders) and had been developed to assist all university personnel with identification and mitigation of hazards and to promote a safe, efficient work place environment.

Any Harvard University employees who use or may use ladders while at work first complete appropriate safety training and then comply with all elements of this standard and shall be used in conjunction with other Harvard University Environmental Health and Safety Standards and associated safe work practices including but not limited to: fall protection, walking and working surfaces, the handling of hazardous materials, and control of hazardous energy.
