Cranes and Hoists
In order to aid in preventing accidents involving cranes hoists and slings these guidelines shall be followed:
- Each crane, chain fall or hoist must have an annual inspection performed by a certified testing agency.
- The operator is responsible for the proper placement of the crane in relationship to the load to be handled and the landing area so as to obtain the best-rated lift capacity, and the installation and maintenance of crane swing radius protection.
- All operators of cranes must possess a valid Massachusetts hoisting license. At no time shall a non-licensed operator hoist loads.
- Personnel are responsible for the proper use of all type of rigging including metal mesh slings, fabric slings, wire rope and chains in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.184. A competent person must inspect all rigging prior to each use, any rigging that is deemed damaged or defective rigging shall be cut up and disposed of immediately. All rigging shall be marked with its intended load capacity and shall never be used to hoist a load greater than its intended capacity.
