During Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a person's chances of survival rise dramatically if Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation are administered quickly. Establishing a well-designed Chain of Survival system that includes cardiac arrest recognition, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, quick defibrillation, and notification & treatment by advanced emergency medical services (EMS) can mean the difference between life and death.
The medical device that can provide defibrillation is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In order to purchase and maintain AEDs, schools and departments must implement their own AED program. This program must be monitored by the University's Medical Director, include training in the proper use of an AED, inspections and maintenance of the AEDs, and ensure program quality improvements.
