Laboratory Cleanout Timeline
The identification and timely notification of an impending laboratory move/ renovation is critical to a successful clean out process. In order of step events, the laboratory clean out procedure is outlined below.
1 MONTH OR GREATER PRIOR TO MOVE
Faculty Laboratory Representative
Contact Facilities Manager or ROM regarding impending move
Facilities Manager or Research Operations Manager (ROM)
Meet with Faculty Laboratory Representative
Distribute the Lab Clean Out Guideline Checklist to laboratories
Contact the EH&S Hazardous Waste Coordinator regarding impending move (6-9152)
3-4 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE
Faculty Lab Rep
Conduct work as directed by the Lab Clean Out Guideline Checklist
Arrange a meeting at least 3 weeks prior to move with the EH&S Hazardous Waste Coordinator (6-9152)
Where applicable, contact Radiation Protection Office to schedule a termination survey (6-1216)
2 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE
Faculty Laboratory Representative
Continue to conduct lab clean out per checklist
Perform any specialized lab clean out activities as determined by the Hazardous Waste Coordinator
Arrange a meeting for progress check with Hazardous Waste Coordinator
1 DAY PRIOR TO MOVE
Facilities Manager or ROM
Ensure that lab clean out signs are posted outside all laboratories affected by the move/renovation. Facilities Managers or ROM's may delegate this responsibility to Faculty Lab Representatives. Post lab clean out signs outside all laboratories affected by the move/renovation (see attachment 2).
THROUGHOUT THE MOVING PERIOD
Waste
EH&S Hazardous Waste Coordinator ensures that all chemicals which constitute a potential hazard are removed and disposed of in accordance to applicable local, state and federal regulations.
Billing
The service vendor will bill laboratory clean outs directly to facility or department as specified and verified during EH&S assessment (See Attachment #2).
Record Keeping
EH&S will retain possession of regulatory mandated paperwork and maintain files for each clean out, to include Hazardous Waste Manifests /Land Disposal Restriction forms, Hazardous Waste Profiles, etc.
