There are strict new government regulations concerning the possession of certain hazardous chemicals. The Department of Homeland Security has created Chemical Facilities Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) to prevent the intentional misuse of these materials through theft, sabotage, or attack.
CFATS requires laboratories and some non-laboratory facilities to estimate the types and quantities of chemicals contained within the Department of Homeland Security’s Chemicals of Interest (COI) list. Please note the COI list varies for laboratories and non-laboratories. In addition to reporting, some facilities will be required to develop site security plans, implement trainings, and maintain comprehensive records.
In February 2008, Harvard University completed its initial inventory phase of CFATS.
