Evacuation Procedures
Should evacuation be necessary, go to the nearest exit or stairway and proceed to an area of refuge outside the building. Move at least 50 feet away from the building.
Most stairways are fire resistant and present barriers to smoke if the doors are kept closed.

- If the stairway is filled with smoke, you may have to evacuate horizontally or use a secondary stairway.
- Do not use elevators . Should the fire involve the control panel of the elevator or the electrical system of the building, power in the building may be cut and you could be trapped between floors. Also, the elevator shaft can become a flue, lending itself to the passage and accumulation of hot gases and smoke generated by the fire.
IF YOU DISCOVER SMOKE OR A FIRE. REMEMBER - R.A.C.E.
- R ELOCATE - If it is safe to do so, Relocate people in immediate danger. Instruct others to report to their designated gathering areas. Be aware of persons who may need assistance.
- A LARM - Pull the building fire Alarm to Alert others. Move to a safe location. Call 911 immediately, then call 5-5560, and report the precise location of the fire
- C ONFINE - Close all doors, windows and other openings to Confine the fire, if this can be done safely.
- E VACUATE - Evacuate building. Do not use elevators. Go to your area of refuge outside / meeting site.
