The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulations require facilities that store certain quantities of oil that could potentially reach a waterway to maintain a spill prevention program. Harvard University has written Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans for five (5) Harvard facilities because of the quantity of oil or oil containing devices that are stored on site. The plans describe spill prevention procedures and include and inventory of oil and oil containing devices. Part of the program is to ensure that all containers or tanks that are used for storing oil or oil products are kept in good condition and inspected regularly.
