Laboratory Checklist
For an explanation of the tips below, click here.
- Use excess chemicals from other labs.
- Be as efficient as possible when ordering chemicals for lab use. Order only the amount needed, as close to the start data as possible.
- Plan how the waste generated from the lab will be disposed of before doing the lab.
- Label chemical containers clearly with the contents, and date.
- Utilize toxic substance substitution. There are many alternatives to traditional solvents for cleaning glass. Use detergents such as Alconox, Micro, and RBS35 on dirty equipment before using KOH/ethanol bath, acid bath or No Chromix bath.
- Consider micro-scaling experiments. Are you using the most up-to-date and pollution preventing equipment?
- Purchase compressed gas cylinders, including lecture bottles, only from manufacturers who will accept the empty cylinder back.
