There are many activities at Harvard University that have the potential to create air emissions that are regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These activities include: laboratory research operations and maintenance of equipment and buildings. The MADEP and the EPA regulate the type and quantity of air pollutants released to the environmental from specific activities and emission sources. The regulations specify when a permit is needed and the permit requires facilities to implement procedures to help control and reduce air pollution. Harvard is also required to monitor air emissions under the permit.
Harvard EH&S can offer many services related to the air emissions program, these include: selecting a vendor or equipment; determining permit applicability; preparing permit applications and negotiating permit conditions; conducting air emissions inventories; completing air emission inventories and reports; coordinating with regulatory agencies; and completing strategic alternatives evaluations.
