The Construction Safety Group (CSG) consists of a team of safety professionals dedicated to reducing the University’s risk associated with construction and renovation activities through the implementation of the Harvard University Construction EH&S Standard. Our goal is to reduce risk by eliminating hazards to construction workers, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
The Harvard University Construction EH&S Standard emphasizes a proactive approach to construction safety through pre-construction planning. Some elements of the Standard include evaluation of each contractor’s safety performance utilizing the Contractor Safety Assessment Program (CSAP), identification of project-specific hazards and control measures compiled in a project hazard analysis, and administration of a comprehensive substance abuse prevention program. The focus remains on planning during the construction phase in the form of pre-task planning conducted for each task performed on site and specific requirements for activities identified as high hazard.
The CSG works closely with Harvard University project managers and contractors to drive the safe and successful completion of projects across the University. The CSG performs design review, conducts risk assessments with project managers, participates in pre-bid activities, reviews project hazard analyses, and is available to discuss opportunities for construction phase involvement and oversight. The CSG also conducts outreach training designed to prepare project managers and contractors to manage safety on Harvard projects. The links and other resources provided here will assist you as a Project Manager planning your project or as a contractor bidding and performing work at the University.
